Meet the Author: "Land Stewardship for Birds: A Guide for Central Texas," with W. Rufus Stephens.
“Private landowners have a tremendous responsibility and opportunity to make a difference as we change our relationship with nature from one of exploitation to one of collaboration." This quote says it all!
Whether you have 1,000 acres or just 1/4 acre, this book is a must have for anyone who wants to offer birds a place to thrive on their property. W. Rufus Stephens will be here to talk about responsible land stewardship, sign books, and chat!
Nearly 50 years of research shows the number of North American birds has declined by 2.9 billion. Breeding birds have declined by nearly 30 percent in virtually all habitats, and Texas is no exception.
While this book focuses on Central Texas, the needs for migrant and wintering birds have specific habitat needs for cover, food, and water throughout Texas. The book is organized by the types of habitats present in Central Texas (i.e woodlands, savannahs, grasslands, rivers and streams, ponds, and lakes; plus residential backyards), but many of these can also be found in other areas of our state, making this book applicable to landowners beyond Central Texas.
New material in this edition includes a section on wildfire, improved bird census guidelines, updated plant lists, the latest standards for managing bird boxes, a more robust guide to managing brush species, and helpful apps and online resources, making Land Stewardship for Birds a valuable addition to the land steward’s reference library.
The book event will follow our Breakfast With the Birds event, 9a-11a. It will include samples of bird-friendly coffee and french toast sticks with bird-friendly maple syrup. Breakfast event is free.
